Scribblenauts Unlimited is a game in the popular Scribblenauts series, which combines action and puzzling. Specifically, it is the fifth title in the franchise, after Scribblenauts, Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix.

The game retains the basic mechanics from its predecessors. The player takes control of Maxwell, a character who can make objects appear by drawing them; the player achieves this by using built-in art software. The goal is to solve a series of puzzles by creating the right object for each occasion.

the game has a more in-depth story than the earlier titles in the series. It reveals that Maxwell was once a spoiled child who used his powers to give a rotten apple to an old man. The old man tried to teach him a lesson by turning his sister Lily into stone. To save her, Maxwell must gather together magic "starites" that will break the curse.

The game introduces an overworld that can be explored as a way of linking the various puzzles together. This introduces more of an RPG-style element to the mechanics, with the player speaking to NPCs to advance the story.

It is possible for the player to create up to 60 objects to co-exist within a single level hub at the same time. The object library is expansive, with objects coming in many shapes and sizes.

Like the other games in the series, Scribblenauts Unlimited is an all-ages title. Although its childlike visual style make it appear particularly suited to younger players, the gameplay is sophisticated enough to attract older audiences as well.

The game has been released across a total of five systems: Windows, iOS, Android, 3DS, and Wii U. Different releases come with slightly different sets of features, making use of their respective format's capabilities.

The Wii U version comes with a co-operative multiplayer mode. Other versions lack multiplayer capabilities, however, although custom-made objects can be shared via Steam on the Windows release.

The Windows version is integrated with Steam Workshop, allowing users to share custom-made objects. The versions for iOS and Android have different touch controls, taking full advantage of multi-touch screens. The 3DS version lacks the object editor from the other versions, but makes up for this with increased communication capabilities utilising the 3DS's StreetPass and SpotPass modes. The Wii U version comes with a large number of exclusive features: a co-operative multiplayer mode, object-sharing capabilities using the console's online function, revamped graphics and exclusive objects and characters lifted from Nintendo's well-known games.

The game celebrates online culture by including references to Nyan Cat, Blue Screen of Death, Cool Story Bro and other Internet memes. Simply draw the relevant graphic, and the corresponding character will be summoned.
